VASER liposuction has become one of the most popular modern body-contouring techniques. But the most decisive question is: "Is it right for me?"

What Is VASER Liposuction?

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) uses ultrasonic energy to selectively target fat cells. A specialised probe emits ultrasonic vibrations that soften the membrane of fat cells and prepare them for gentle aspiration. Blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue are spared.

How Does It Differ from Traditional Liposuction?

In traditional liposuction, fat is removed directly by mechanical suction, which can also damage vessels, nerves and elastic connective tissue. VASER targets only fat, which translates into:

Ideal Candidate Criteria

Good Candidate

  • Close to ideal weight
  • Has stubborn localized fat deposits
  • Fat that resists diet and exercise
  • Good skin elasticity (young or middle-aged)
  • Realistic expectations
  • Healthy, non-smoker

Not a Good Candidate

  • Obese (BMI 30+) — should lose weight first
  • Significant skin laxity — may need a tummy tuck
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease, clotting disorders
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Unstable weight (rapidly fluctuating)
  • Unrealistic expectations

Which Body Areas Are Treated?

VASER can address almost any area with localized fat deposits. The most commonly treated zones include:

Multiple areas can be treated in one session. The safe upper limit per session is around 4–5 litres of total aspirate; the exact amount depends on the patient.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Before Surgery

At the consultation, BMI, skin quality, distribution of fat and general health are evaluated. Blood work is performed. Smoking, aspirin and blood thinners are discontinued 2 weeks prior.

During Surgery

Depending on volume, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia + sedation. Tiny incisions (3–5 mm) are made and a fine cannula inserted. Tumescent fluid (local anesthetic + hemostatic solution) is injected, the VASER probe emulsifies the fat, and it is then gently aspirated. The procedure lasts 1.5–4 hours.

After Surgery

Longevity of Results

Fat cells removed do not return, but remaining cells can enlarge with weight gain. To preserve the result:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VASER and traditional liposuction?

Traditional liposuction removes fat by direct mechanical suction; vessels, nerves and connective tissue can be affected. VASER uses ultrasonic energy to selectively target fat, so recovery, bruising and smoothness of outcome all improve.

Is VASER a weight-loss method?

No. It is a body-contouring procedure. The ideal candidate is close to their goal weight and only seeks to remove localized fat.

When can I return to work?

Desk workers: 3–5 days. Physically demanding jobs: 10–14 days. Compression garment for 4–6 weeks is important.

Are results permanent?

Yes. Fat cells removed do not return. With significant weight gain, remaining cells can enlarge. Healthy lifestyle preserves the result.

Is it painful?

No pain during surgery thanks to anesthesia. Afterwards, a moderate muscle-ache sensation is common, controlled easily with pain medication and typically resolving in 3–4 days.
